This is not to say that I didn't enjoy the book, I LOVED this story, but Lilac got under my skin after every turn of the page. Lilac and I just couldn't connect with each other. I've never read about a main character that no matter how hard I tried to like them, I just couldn't. However, it was extremely rewarding for me as a reader as I attempted to put myself in her shoes. I spent most of the novel trying to get my emotions in check especially because I struggled with Lilac's character. Thus, she travels through the dangerous woods searching for The Witch of Lupine Grotto who can supposedly remove her curse and meets the wildest creatures along the way!! Brianna Sugalski tells an extremely heart wrenching story set in the French Renaissance where human beings are extremely hateful towards the fae folk and even go so far as to exterminate them under the radar. Lilac spends her whole life being feared, and dare I say hated, by the townsfolk and nobles she is meant to rule over which makes her see a truly magnificent gift as a curse.

Keep in mind that this is the first book in a series to be prepared for more magical adventures to comeĭisenchanted by Brianna Sugalski was riveting and I enjoyed losing myself in the Brocéliande forest with a witty vampire and a princess who can understand the fae folk.

The world building is fantastic in this story, I love how all kinds of magical creatures come together in new ways and interact- the world is for sure my favorite part of the story! Overall this was a very different kind of story, full of magic and quests as well as a forbidden romance and a princess who wants to save herself regardless of boundaries and rules. There was an interesting audio effect used when Lilac heard the Darkling voices, making it sound like the voices were echoing through a tunnel to differentiate what was regular speech from the Darkling speak that not everyone else understands. The narrator did a good job of creating unique voices for all the characters, making a conversation between the characters easy to follow. She spent half her life being shunned and kept away from the public (and most other people in general) for her dark gift of communication with Darklings, so her people and life skills are noticeably rusty. And then other times she was naive and completely oblivious, trusting everything at face value and acting like a spoiled princess (which she technically was, but still). At times she was so bold and daring, having lots of courage and swagger, running through the woods alone and trying to seduce a stranger. I did struggle a little bit with liking the main character Lilac. Now that she is nearing her coronation for the throne, she sets off on an impossible quest to get rid of her gift and maybe better her kingdom along the way. Lilac has a gift that nobody should have, causing her to be locked away in the palace and away from the public eye- she can communicate with the evil Darkling creatures that share the realm.
